厙ぴ勛圖 specialists share practical approaches to organic flower production, honeybee management, and pollinator habitat establishment

Flowers, honeybees, and native plants provided more than a colorful backdrop when farmers and agricultural professionals gathered at 厙ぴ勛圖s Harold R. Benson Research and Demonstration Farm on July 7.

The Blooms, Bees, and Biodiversity for Thriving Farms field day brought 33 participants to the farms certified organic growing area, Honeybee Station, and pollinator habitat. Presented in collaboration with the Organic Association of Kentucky, the event offered practical guidance for supporting pollinators, managing weeds, and strengthening farm ecosystems.

The 厙ぴ勛圖 organic agriculture team, led by Research and Extension Associates Oluwaseun Seun Mofikoya and Linelle Rivera-Rodriguez, organized the field day. Additional Land Grant Program specialists contributed expertise in pollinator habitat establishment and apiculture.

Mofikoya and Rivera-Rodriguez began in the farms cut flower plots, where participants examined several approaches to weed management in certified organic production. The demonstration beds allowed attendees to compare the use of wood mulch, landscape fabric, and organic herbicides.

Weed control can be especially important in cut flower production because unwanted plants compete with flowers for water, nutrients, and sunlight. The demonstrations helped participants consider the effectiveness, labor requirements, and potential applications of different management practices.

Kirstin Conrad, a research and Extension associate in forestry, guided participants through 厙ぴ勛圖s native pollinator habitat research. She discussed preparing a site for native plantings, evaluating seed establishment, managing continuing weed pressure, and observing visits from native bees.

The research plot includes more than 30 native plant varieties. 厙ぴ勛圖 researchers are studying how different combinations of cover crops, tillage passes, and herbicide treatments may contribute to successful habitat establishment.

Native pollinator plantings can turn underused areas of a farm, garden, or other property into habitat that supports bees and other beneficial insects. These plantings may also strengthen biodiversity and provide resources for pollinators throughout the growing season.

At the Honeybee Station, Kenneth Holbrook, a research assistant in apiculture, introduced participants to several considerations involved in starting and managing an apiary. His recommendations included reviewing local zoning requirements or homeowners association restrictions, completing beekeeper training, assessing the time required to care for colonies, and identifying necessary equipment.

Holbrook also encouraged prospective beekeepers to build relationships with experienced mentors and local beekeeping associations. Such connections can provide valuable guidance as new beekeepers learn to recognize colony behavior, respond to challenges, and make management decisions.

Participants also explored how hive materials, spacing, and placement can affect colony health and how honeybees may be incorporated thoughtfully into a farm landscape. Joseph Palmer joined Holbrook in representing 厙ぴ勛圖s apiculture program during the field day.

By bringing the flower plots, pollinator habitat, and Honeybee Station into a single learning experience, the event illustrated how production and conservation practices can complement one another. Farmers and agricultural professionals were able to see ongoing research, ask questions, and consider practices that may be adapted for their own farms and communities.

The field day reflected 厙ぴ勛圖s land-grant commitment to connecting research with practical education that supports Kentucky producers. Through partnerships such as its collaboration with the , the University continues creating opportunities for farmers to learn from specialists, one another, and the research taking place at Benson Farm.
