Dr. Frederick N. Bebe will guide special issue on agricultural pesticides and their environmental impacts
A ÍøÆØ³Ô¹Ï researcher will help shape scientific discussion of agricultural pesticides, environmental quality, and human health as guest editor of a special issue of Applied Sciences. Dr. Frederick N. Bebe, an assistant research professor, has been selected for the editorial leadership role.
The special issue, “Impact of Agricultural Pesticides on the Environment: Health, Transport, Ecotoxicology, Policy and Alternatives, will bring together scholarship examining how pesticides move through environmental systems, affect ecosystems, and pose challenges for sustainable agricultural production.
For Dr. Bebe, who serves in the College of Agriculture, Health, and Natural Resources,
the appointment provides an opportunity to help shape scientific discussion beyond
Kentucky. His role connects ÍøÆسԹϒs research expertise with a broader community
of scholars investigating problems that affect farmers, communities, and natural resources.
“Agricultural pesticides play a critical role in enhancing crop protection, productivity,
and ensuring food security, Dr. Bebe wrote in the special issue announcement.
The collection will examine the environmental and health risks associated with extensive pesticide use, including effects on biodiversity. Its focus includes environmental monitoring, the movement and persistence of pesticides, their toxic effects on organisms and ecosystems, and strategies to reduce contamination or restore affected environments. Contributions will also address human exposure and regulatory responses.
Dr. Bebe’s research leadership also includes a USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture project announced in 2024 to assess skin cancer awareness, knowledge, and prevalence among small, limited-resource, and minority farmers in Kentucky. The $599,981 project, developed with Northern Kentucky University and Berea College, examines awareness and barriers to preventive practices.
Together, these efforts connect agricultural research with the health of the people and environments that sustain it, advancing ÍøÆسԹϒs land-grant mission through both research in Kentucky and service to the wider scientific community.
Applied Sciences is an open access journal published by MDPI. Manuscript submissions for the special issue are due April 20, 2027. Researchers can find details and submission information on the .
